CHAPTER 17

LILLIAN:

“Hey Jilly Ha- this is your girl, Lilly... remember me from the party the other day? The one with the—

“Yep, right, that’s me!”

“Uh-huh”

“What’s that now?”

“I can’t call you Jilly?”

“Uh-huh”

“Okay, fine. Then I’ll be formal too. It’s your girl Lillian, not Lilly then.”

“Look, so I bet you’re wondering why I’m calling you like an old person. It’s because I’ll be in my autocar really soon and you know their silly rules on distracted emergency drivers.”

“Right? Gee Jillian. What should we do about these regulations?”

“Okay, well, anyway. I’m on my way to a protest. I’m protesting the pill.”

“You know—"

“Yep, those ones. The pills that make us not do that thing.”

“What was it called?”

“Oh yeah, thanks! Hiccup! We no longer have to do that hiccup thing anymore because of that pill. My mom had me take it when I was young. But my child? Never.”

“Yeah, girl, you didn’t know!? I have a baby girl, Sillian. We just call her Silly. She’ll be 25 months old next year.”

“Yes, yes, I know that’s technically two years old. But—"

“Okay, look, never mind. My point is that ever since we stopped hiccuping, the Glutatribe race has just popped up!”

“You know, the rare race of humanoids. The tragic subspecies.”

“See, I knew you knew!”

“Ha ha, you’re funny Jillian. But let’s get back to the Lillian thoughts—my thoughts.”

“Have you seen how many Glutatribes are out there now, ever since we’ve stopped being able to hiccup? There’s a correlation. I know there is. This is why I’m forming a protest.”

“Yes, Jillian, you got it! It’s a protest that my Serotribe daughter doesn't have to take the pill. I’d rather have her hiccup for a bit than turn into a Glutatribe. And I should have that right to do so!”

“Yes—

“Uh-huh.”

“Uh-huh.”

“So Jillian, are you interested in joining your girl Lillian on a protest to protect children like Sillian?”

“No?”

“Why?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Okay, I know. I’m sorry I asked you last minute. I promise I do want you to come.”

“What’s that now?”

“You can come late?”

“Oh wow! How wonderful! Look, I very much look forward to seeing you there. We’ll meet a few minutes from the Weg-bots and that autocar dealership. I’m sure you have enough money to take the autobus, right?”

“The autobuses are down? Why?!”

“No way! A hacking? Again? These kids have no self-control. I bet it’s also because of those hiccup pills. They just—

“Oh, what’s that now?”

“You don’t think so?”

“Well, I don’t really know if the hiccup pills cause disobedience. I was just being facetious. It was a joke. You know a—

“Okay, so I’ll meet you there. Okay, great. I’m heading to my autocar now. I’m going to make some more phone calls to see who else can meet us there.”

“Oh! One more thing, Lillian.”

“I was wondering if you could look after my daughter, you know, Sillian, for a few days. Brad and I want to go to this party and—

“Hello?”

“Hello?”

Hm. The call must have dropped. Time to make my second call.

“Autocar?”

Autocar: Yes

Lilly: This is Lilly.

Autocar: Hi Lilly.

Lilly: Yes, hello to you too. So autocar. I need you to do me a favor.
